Thursday October 6, Mende

Tonight's view of Mende from our apartment.

This morning there was mist around making rather nice views as the sun came up over the hills. Packed up, walked about 8 minutes to get the car from the parking area, back to the apartment and loaded up and we were off. Have really enjoyed staying here, an easy walk to everything and such a great view to be able to sit and watch. After much discussion we decided to head out to the motorway, rather than take a much longer journey through another gorge. Stopped at a box store area on the outskirts of Millau to get a few things but very disappointed, seemed to have a lot of empty shops and not very “inspiring”! So back to the motorway and after half an hour I found an exit to the town of La Canourgue, and read that the film “A Good Year” with Russell Crowe was filmed here. Must watch it at some stage. Anyway what a really great town, which has been called “a little Venice” as it is criss-crossed by canals. Evidently these were built in the middle ages and used for running mills. Enjoyed walking around and ended up having lunch (again). I had the Plat du Jour which was a veal type casserole with Pilaf Rice, the meat was just so tender and had great subtle flavours. A real French dish. This town is one of the nicest we have been in, really clean and tidy with beautiful old buildings. Continued on a lesser road following the Lot River through very pretty countryside before arriving at Mende and our first stop at a supermarket to stock up. This was a Super U Hypermarket, and the biggest and best we have been in so far in France. You name it, they had it, although the downside is that it takes longer to do the shopping. Anyway, it was a lot of fun. Finally arrived at our apartment with instructions to get into the lock box and really pleased. Able to park our car right outside and it’s very well appointed with amazing views over Mende. Maybe a steep walk down though! Will check that out tomorrow! Do have a senior moment to admit to though…. realised that we had stayed in this very town in 2017 in our motorhome down by the Lot River. We ended up spending two days here as so enjoyed it, and I had completely forgotten!!!

Millau looked different this morning with
the morning mist.

Impressed with all the corks!!

The age of these doors and walls never

I did read about the beautiful church as the centre piece of the town. Your entry in Travel with Passport has prompted Bob Scott to add some images of the viaduct structure.
