The staff at the Boulangerie

Today has been another of the leisurely days that this road trip in a rental car is all about, time to not travel too far and enjoy the French way of life.

And first stop this morning was the Boulangerie that I visited yesterday, and even took Ian as well. It was really busy and the staff just so friendly, even met the baker! The fig tart and a little apple tart for Ian came home with us….will sample tonight for dessert! They just look so good. This very tiny village just oozes character.

Decided to have a look around the town of Sommières, which was about a 30 minute drive, but there was a diversion in place that took us through quite a few small villages and small roads, making for a very interesting drive. Found a large parking area just beside the Vidourle River and crossed over to the old Medieval town. We wandered around the streets and through little alleys. Evidently the town is built in the old river bed and the houses are built above the alleys to withstand the floods.  No sign of rain today and in fact the warmest day since we arrived in France, but a very pleasant 28 degrees.

Eventually found a nice café beside the river and enjoyed a salad and a wine (of course!) and watched the people wandering past. A perfect way to spend a Sunday. Took a different route home to avoid the diversion, and arrived back to the apartment which was pleasantly cool. Can understand why houses in these hot climates are built in stone with shutters on their windows.

Tomorrow we are heading to Millau for 3 days. We are enjoying not having an itinerary and just soaking up the atmosphere.

Lots of photos, have good wifi!
