Thursday May 11 – Another night at Nierstein

Could be in NZ, a couple of cockies having a chat.

This is such a nice camp, very quiet with only two other campers. Woke to a very cold grey morning which soon turned to a bit of drizzle but by late morning it had cleared and the sun came out. Ian did some more rearranging of the boot (or garage) in the van and seems to have found a place for everything as well as the bikes. Shows how much space we wasted before! I had a domestic time, even got some hand washing done and after a coffee decided we would take our bikes for their first outing down to Rewe, the supermarket not far away. The guy at the camp had said there was a bike trail on the other side of the road so we got all geared up and off we went….as far as the front gate with no sign of any bike trail. It was a very busy road, and not that wide - we got cold feet, went back to the van and locked up the bikes, then walked to the store to get a few supplies, feeling a little frustrated.
The girl behind the deli counter was such a delight, and
played up to the camera when I asked her for a photo.

Enjoyed our chat with Karl
On our way back we found a bike path through the vineyard and we stopped and chatted to Karl who was cultivating between the vines. He told us about the really bad frosts they had in March that had killed off many of the new buds meaning that this year’s harvest will be well down on last years. He has a winery in the neighbouring village and suggested we call in and see it.
Such great bike paths
After lunch we set off again on our bikes, this time through the bike paths in the vineyards, a real testing time for the bikes….and what a treat, just loved every minute of it.  The country is rolling and the paths went up and down, the e-bikes made it just so easy. At one stage Ian clocked 35kph and had a grin like a Cheshire cat. We headed into the next village of Schwabsburg and it was great being able to meander through the little narrow streets, just a breeze, we certainly couldn’t have done this in the motorhome. Found the Jung winery so stopped and called in and met Johannes, the son. He mentioned about trying some wines, which sounded a pretty good idea as we weren’t driving! He explained about the different wines they made and a bit of their history. His family have been making wine on this property since at least 1860. With a really nice bottle of Riesling and a red in the panniers we headed back to the van. What a great way to spend an afternoon, could get quite used to this!
