Friday May 5 – Neer…..on the Maas River

A very interesting river boat that loaded supplies.
Googled it and found that you can rent it for functions.

It was a bit of a late start this morning as there was so much activity on the river that we couldn’t stop watching – boats were queuing up to off load onto the jetty in from of us…cars, people, and goods and one even seemed to have a mechanical issue. Certainly, a great spot to chill out and watch the action, although it was a very chilly morning, which thankfully has warmed up to a very pleasant evening.
It has been a good time to just meander for a few days, and today we crossed into Germany for a while so that we could cross the Rhine. Amazing how immediately the countryside changed, hills, lots of trees and even some castles. It really was a pleasant drive taking the back roads through the countryside. We passed through Cleve and Goch then it was back into Netherlands. This part of the county doesn’t feature the canal and water systems that we saw further north.
A little bit of shopping in Venray to replace my pillow that had become too flat…and Ian wanted one that would stop me snoring! Interesting the sizes are quite different to English ones, more square shaped, and the guy said that they are different again to German pillows as are the bed sizes. Will see how it goes.
Needed to visit a supermarket, and then the issues started. We have come to the conclusion that supermarkets tend to have small carparks as everyone rides a bike…and because the housing is so dense with apartment blocks the stores are nestled in housing areas…not a good place for motorhomes. Followed leads to a few but they were hopeless as we wound around narrow streets so in the end decided to give it a miss and will try again tomorrow!
Found a really nice camp spot beside the Maas River, with 12 sites for campers, and just one left when we arrived about 4pm…well timed. Not so much traffic on this river as yesterday but very peaceful and a really nice place.
Beautiful tree lined roads.
People are really proud of their gardens, everything is
very neat and formal.

A wee ferry taking passengers and cyclists across the River Maar.
Tonight it felt really spring like beside the river.
