Amazing view from the Schloss - well worth the walk. |
It had rained heavily overnight
and very misty this morning with the odd little bit of drizzle. Walked into
town to the hairdresser for my 10am appointment a little apprehensive as didn’t
know if she would be able to understand English, but ended up with a great
hairdresser, Heike who could speak pretty good English. She knew how to cut well
and after a little discussion she set to and did a really good job…..I was
extremely happy.
Back to the van and we had a
coffee, the weather was looking a bit better so donned our coats and headed off
up through town and followed the pathway up to the Schloss Staufenberg at the
top of the hill. It really was a climb and probably walked about 4 kms, firstly
through the forest where we were surprised at the number of chestnut trees, the
pathway was littered with them. Walked up through some vineyards to the castle which
is a winery as well as a café. It was a
bit quiet today as the road up was closed for two days so their only customers
were those that came on foot through the pathways!
The view was just amazing,
looking down on the patchwork of vines, through the village and right across
the Rhine Valley to the hazy mountains of France. We sat out on the terrace
just mesmerised by it. No big camera today, just too heavy to carry, but my little
Sony did a great job of capturing the view.
We whiled away a good part of
the afternoon sitting over a really nice lunch and some wines, before the long
walk back to Ruakiwi. We met the manager of the castle as we left and he set us
on a different route down which took us right through the vineyard and we
chatted with some of the pickers along the way. The harvest has been on the go
for 6 weeks and will probably be finished by the end of the week. Feeling a bit weary now but all it has been a
really great day.
