September 24 Wednesday, Greenwood Campground, Bennington

Tonight we are high up in the Green Mountains in what is probably the best campground we have used. It is an open area, with the surrounding hills glowing with autumn colours. The camp is over 100 acres, and there are several small lakes. We went for a walk and Ian used the camp rowboat to investigate one of them, discovered a beaver dipping and diving, and followed it back to its nest.
Woke to another glorious morning, although the forecast is for a bit of rain coming.
First stop was in Peterborough, a very pretty small town with wonderful old buildings. After finally finding a park…always a little more difficult with Ruakiwi, we wandered around the town and stopped for a coffee. Continued on passing through a number of small towns, the whole area is tree covered, and the colour is really showing up, getting better by the day. It is hard not to keep trying to capture it on camera, although difficult to show the tapestry that the different species and varieties create, from yellows to oranges and reds.
Went into Keene which is one of the bigger towns in the area, topped up on supplies. The girl in the supermarket directed us to a park in the town, after asking about a good spot for lunch. Managed to get lost a number of times, and finally found it, but not a good lead…sat in the van for lunch beside a busy street, then walked into a small area where there was a weir. Spotted a big heron…the second one we have seen today.
Decided to head west over the Connecticut River and into Vermont to a campsite up in the Green Mountains. The drive was wonderful, through maples and oak forests, all glowing in the afternoon sun, and small villages in amongst them. We often wonder what the people living in this area are employed at, certainly not in agriculture as there are no farms.
It was a big climb over the range and the “navigator” managed to miss the turning to the camp, which involved a U turn, and a 5 mile drive back up into the hills again, but well worth it.
