Saturday September 27
September 27 Saturday, Lake Champagne Campground, Randolph Center, VT
The forecast was for rain all day, but woke to a fine but overcast day, and although the rain threatened all day, it never arrived. But it is very muggy and warm.
Headed into Rutland as Ian wanted to check out the Home Depot, but not what he expected, more like Bunnings in NZ.
Took the scenic route to Woodstock that took us though the base of the Green Mountains. Although the sun wasn’t shining, the colours in the hills were rich with yellows, oranges and reds. The only problem is that there are very few places to pull over to take photos, especially with a wider vehicle, and weekends are always busier. We climbed up into the hillds to the ski resort area of Killington where we stopped for a coffee and I checked out a particularly good gift store. It seems so strange to see ski tows right beside the roads, can’t quite comprehend the winter weather here.
Such a great drive down into Woodstock, the scenery is superb, and we stopped at a few small villages along the way. Coming into town, we saw signs for a woodworking festival…the 5th Annual Vermont Fine Furniture and Woodworking Festival was on at the local High School! Managed to find a park, had a quick lunch in Ruakiwi before checking it out. We really enjoyed wandering around and seeing some great pieces of furniture, real works of art made out of local timer.
Had planned to stop in town, which is so picturesque, but it was so busy, and parking was at a premium so continued east to Lebanon and a bit of shopping at the mall.
We headed north to Randolph on I91 through mile upon mile of hills covered with maples, oaks and other hardwoods creating breathtaking views. It is a very special area.
This campground is the busiest we have seen for weeks, but it is very open with large mown areas overlooking the lake. Had a large bag of laundry and ended up getting my exercise as the laundry was some distance away! Will do it hard hanging washing on a clothesline again!
