Saturday Spetember 20th

September 20 Saturday, Blackbrook Cove Campground, Lake Aziscohos, ME

When we travelled in Maine 4 years ago, we really enjoyed the high country areas in the north, and tonight we are back in that area, camping in a wonderful spot beside a lake…understand there are moose in the hills around us, but haven’t seen any as yet!
Good start to the day, we called into the AAA (American Automobile Association) in Augusta and used our NZ credentials and got great maps and camping guides for all the areas that we will be crossing on our way back to Indiana.
After having a study up, we chose a route north west that took us along some scenic routes. After so long in coastal areas where all we did was follow the coastline, now we have decisions to make, as we can travel in so many directions….makes it more difficult! Our route took us through Livermore Falls (a very forgettable paper mill town), Farrington and then to a wonderful small village of Kingfield. Spotted a gallery in an old barn and went to investigate. It featured mainly contemporary art, but the best part was meeting the elderly German artist, who was just a treasure. She lives in the house beside the barn, where she has horses housed downstairs. The artworks shared the place with the very well stacked firewood and the fresh hay. The place had such an appealing smell. Ian was very intrigued with the barn which dated back to 1835 and had been built with all timber framing, not a nail in it, but wooden pegs…such a treat.
I am having a few issues with my favourite lens, and it is causing me a lot of grief…going into error mode intermittently, just when I need it. Checked out the error code and it is about the contacts, so will have to accept it as to get it serviced will be impossible…very frustrating as we are in such a wonderful area.
We took the scenic route following the Carrabassett River, which tumbled through a corridor of hardwood trees already taking on a real autumn look. The afternoon sunlight just made them glow…and me! Although the colour is only just starting, it is still spectacular. This is a big ski area with the Sugarloaf Mountain rising above, strange to see the ski paths cut through the forest.
After passing through Rangeley we continued and finally found the campground, not very well signposted, but a gem. There seems to be a lot of regulars here, and when we arrived everyone was sitting around having a pot luck dinner ( at 5pm) featuring beans cooked over a fire in the ground! We are so fortunate with the weather, a very calm evening and a great sunset.
