Tuesday September 9
September 9, Tuesday, Murphy’s Camping on the Ocean, Murphy Cove, NS
I am sitting in front of Ruakiwi overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with small Cyprus covered islands dotted throughout this cove, just an idyllic location. Ian has gone out on a two hour cruise with the camp owner and some other campers to boat around the islands and do a bit of fishing….I would have loved to have gone, but knowing my weak stomach on the ocean decided to stay put.
The weather has been fabulous all day, woke to a very clear still morning went for a morning walk before breakfast and were on the road by 8.30. The remoteness of this area has been quite special, hardly a car on the road, and we have travelled through heavily wooded areas, then into small isolated villages hugging the coast line around little inlets with fishing boats and lobster pots everywhere. This tourist route is called the Fisherman’s trail, but don’t think many travel this end of it.
The road came to a dead end with a ferry travelling to and fro over a small inlet. It runs 24hrs a day, at a cost of $5 per vehicle, not sure who subsidises it as there was only one other on our trip, and two people operating it.
Stopped in the small village of Sherbrooke planning to get a coffee, but found such a nice little coffee spot, and as it was after 12 had a sandwich as well…good find! Spent quite a bit of time chatting with a couple from Calgary that had come across in the ferry with us, really nice people and they will be keen for us to catch up with them when we travel in their neck of the woods.
As we continued south down the coast towards Halifax, the roads got a little busier and the area in general looked a bit more prosperous. Crossed quite a few rivers, and the water is very often a real tea colour…come to the conclusion that they must pass through the peat areas that are around here.
Saw this camp listed in the guide, sounded good and sure enough it was. The site was $25 and Ian’s 2 hour trip $15!
