Friday September 5....Cabot Trail

September 5 Friday, Corney Brook Campground, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, NS

Wow, today has far exceeded our expectations….. we have seen the most superb scenery and the weather could not have been better…and to top it all off, we are camping the night in a National Park unserviced campground, overlooking the St Lawrence Ocean…and we have bought some firewood for the first time (at $6) and I am sitting outside by the fire writing my blog…what could be better!
We were up bright and early, and were on the road before 8, with the weather looking extremely promising. The drive took us through some great country, huge areas of forests, little inlets, and much of it through the trees. We climbed up to a high point on Mt Smokey, and when we hit the coast again at Ingonish the real scenery started. From then on we were on the coast with small fishing ports, beaches edged with marbled rocks, waves crashing into little coves, and high rocky cliffs with cedars clinging to them. Ian was extremely patient as I stopped time and again for photographs…they were real picture postcard scenes, but I couldn’t help myself!
Took a detour through Neil’s Harbour, and Ian had a great half hour talking with a local fisherman while I took photos. They have been stopped from catching cod on the hand lines, but still allowing the big netters to continue…they were heading out to catch mackerel to sell for bait fish. Obviously fishing is the only thing they know, but it is not very rewarding. They hadn’t been to sea since July 15!
We took the road out to Bay St Lawrence…what an amazing natural port, unfortunately nowhere to camp, so returned to the main road and across the top of the island through the national park and climbed to 455 metres through 300 year old maple trees..the sight in the fall will be spectacular, although we are seeing a little bit of colour already with some species. Even spotted a moose swimming in a small lake, but couldn’t really get close enough.
Had planned to stay in the main serviced camp in Cheticamp, but were delighted when we spotted this site. Here’s hoping for a great sunset!
