September 8, Monday, Canso, NS

Ian and I went for a good walk before breakfast after our dinner last night. Someone (can’t remember who!) told me that we must sample the Nova Scotia delicacy….”poutine”. Saw it on the menu last night so we had a bowl each for starters….it is simply a bowl of hot chips sprinkled with mozzarella cheese then covered with gravy!!!! Sounds revolting but can assure you it was delicious…not counting the calories. Real comfort food. Followed this with a platter of the local seafood and salads, all in all a pleasant change to our home cooked meals.
The day was a bit gray bit soon cleared, and the wind got up. We had quite a long drive today, almost 200 miles, and a lot of it was on windy bumpy roads. We followed the coast south around Cape Breton Island, through some real wilderness areas with coastal spruce woods. Stopped at a small fishing port of Fourchu to brew a coffee, and the wind was whistling down the harbour making it feel as isolated as it was.
Completed our round trip of the island crossing over the Canso Causeway again, then followed the South Eastern coastline around Chedabuckto Bay. Beautiful little coves and a few small villages, but overall pretty isolated. Headed out the peninsula to the port of Canso, one of the oldest settlements in Nova Scotia, based around fishing. It is still a fishing port, and times have been a bit tough by the looks of the retail area, but the campground is right on the harbour looking out to sea. Only one other person here, very peaceful.
