..and a wedding, one of two we saw. |
The roads
were really quiet this morning when we left Vegas and were soon on the Lake Mead Highway.
What an amazing drive we had through some rugged spectacular landscape. Stopped
at a marina on Lake Mead and couldn’t get over
how low the lake was, heard that after 10 years of droughts it is now only 30
feet above its critical minimum. It is 100 feet below where it should be. There
were very few boaties out and about which did surprise us as this was the first
weekend that the lake had been opened after the govt closures….Lake Mead is a
National Recreation Area. The weather is just fabulous, not a breathe of wind,
not a cloud in the sky and about 30 degrees….in NZ every boatie would be out
enjoying it but guess this is the norm here.

Had thought
we may have a lazy afternoon and camp on the lake but not really any appealing
campgrounds, so continued onto the Valley of Fire State Park.
Found that
the campground was full, but there was free camping available just outside the
park boundary on public land. Decided that was a good option so bought a day
pass into the park and drove the 10 mile road to the back of the park. This
landscape is stunning, the colours and geological formations are fabulous. It
was late afternoon and I took my camera and went for a hike down a trail, the
light was still pretty harsh but enjoyed the walk although was pretty hot by
the time I got back, especially the climb back to the carpark through soft
sand! As we drove out of the park the sun was getting really low and the
landscape just glowed.
Good spot
tonight and have fellow campers from UK as neighbours, they missed out
on the campground as well.
