Friday October 25, North Rim Grand Canyon, Arizona

A brief moment as the sun lit part of the canyon.
We had left camp before 7am this morning and drove out to Bryce Point. It was only just getting light but others had arrived before us. Ian stayed in the van having a coffee while I walked out to the point with my tripod and camera, although the sky was looking pretty ominous, lots of dark clouds around the horizon with just a glimmer of pink. More and more people arrived, quite funny watching as we juggled for position with out tripods waiting for the sun to break through and illuminate the rock face, lots of chat about where we had been and where we should go. Then for about a minute as the sun broke through the bright orange light played onto a section of the face, before it disappeared under a cloud, everything went very dull and that was the end of the sunrise, a little disappointing, but still stunning for that short time.
We had breakfast in the carpark watching the sky, but it was really cloudy so decided not to do the walk down in the canyon as the light would have been pretty dull…..maybe it was a good excuse, the climb looked pretty strenuous.!!!!!!

Set our path for the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and retraced our path for quite a way until we got to Kanab. By this stage the day had cleared and the sun was shining!
In the small town of Hatch, on one side of the road this motel had closed.
Over the road, it had been replaced but a much more modern place.

Climbed about 4000 feet through forest until the land opened out to wide pasture, the temperature dropped to about 9 degrees and there was snow in shaded areas beside the road. It was a great drive and very little traffic around, this is the end of the season and this park closes in a week’s time.
Noticed quite a bit of haze around, then realised it was smoke and signs said that it was a controlled burn off and not to report a fire. But sadly, the smoke has created a haze in the canyon.  Our campsite is sitting on the edge of the Transept Canyon which runs into the Grand Canyon, quite remote and very special.
The road into the canyon.
A very hazy view from our campsite, but pretty spectacular.
Our neighbour had the right idea!
