Tuesday August 27, Sequim WA
Have had
another great day, once again being so well looked after. Today the weather has
been really mild, overcast for much of the day, and tonight there has been some
light rain, very welcome by the locals as it has been a really dry summer.
After a
leisurely breakfast Dick and Witta gave us a guided tour of Sequim. First stop
was to find some sandals for Ian, which he managed to do in the second shop we
went to. Visited the local museum and interested to learn all about a Mastadon
that was found in this area in the 70’s. I had never heard of it, but it is
like a mammoth and dated back 14,000 years. Interesting when they dug up the
bones a stone spear head was found buried in a bone, indicating that humans
were around at that time. Aidan, I know you would have loved to have seen the
bones and the film about it.
Called into
a “Kiwi Fish and Chip” shop in the main street to see who owned it. One of the
staff chatted with us as the owner was away, but he said the owner’s name was Bryan. When we asked him
what his surname was he very seriously said “Kiwi” and had no idea that it was
a name all NZ’ers are given!
Later in
the day when we stopped at a fruit and vegetable stall, a lady came and spoke
to us after hearing our accent….she was a kiwi who had been in Sequim for 30
years. We forget how unusual our accents are!
Witta took
me to visit the studio of Phil Tauran, a French photographer who has been in
Sequim for a few years, loved his work.
Called into
W & D’s golf club for lunch, before a tour of the district ending up at a
railway bridge and walking trail over the Dungeness River.
Can you imagine Ian’s face as he watched a large number of salmon moving up the
river, but it is closed for fishing. He’s hoping to get the chance to go salmon
fishing further down the coast. Had a good walk along the old railway
line….much needed after all the wonderful food we have been eating.
After
dinner tonight enjoyed a very competitive and fun game of cards called Jester which is really
similar to a game we play called “Oh Hell”….have to say I just pipped Witta in
the last hand to take a win!
