Friday August 30, Still at South Beach

Had always planned to spend a few nights here as it is a the start of the Labour Day holiday weekend, the last big holiday of summer and don’t want to start our trip on the Oregon Coast until after it is over. Although may have a delay as the fresh water inlet to our toilet is leaking, Ian has tried to get in to fix it but looking at the manual it seems that it may need a new seal kit, so will sort it out once the holiday is over. In the meantime we are managing by turning the water pump off when we don’t need it.
The wind and rain stopped and the sun came out for a short while this morning, made the most of it and went for a long walk down the beach. Just love this rugged windswept coast. Interesting, found a decaying large animal on the beach, or rather smelt it first and the sea birds were enjoying a feast. Not really sure what it was but felt sure it was not a sea animal, and by the look of its claws suspected it may have been a bear….anyway it is a good story!
Had a quiet day sorting and packing things away, so much easier when everything has a place. Spent the afternoon reading, Sherry sent me off with “The Help” which I hadn’t read and really enjoyed it.
The sea fog came in this afternoon and can hardly see past the waterline, although surprisingly mild.
Alan, the chap in the next door camp had a heap of firewood left at his campsite and he invited us to join him over the campfire. He is a retired dentist and worked on the Navajo Reservations, now spends a lot of time on the road. Liz also joined us and we had a great evening. They both live in the Arizona area and passed on some really good tips.

Good to catch up Meg and hear that all is well.
Fabulous image a few days ago of the branch/twig reflected in the water and I can't help thinking that all that moss is reminiscent of our deep south and therefore a rainfree day would be something of a rarity.
Impressive fire pit too.
Family back in UK;Teleman quintet concert last night;Bach Musica in Auckland this evening with Gregor.
Thinking of you each day

Hi Jen, Yes there are plus and minuses with the rain, but just beautiful mosses. Sounds like life at Careywood is pretty full. X Meg

Howdy Travellers, all good in the forests of Tokoroa, month end so invoice time, not out with my boots on today. Vicki has been trying to find a place to put comments without success, easy on this work machine. Out from Maketu on Saturday, second time in 20 yrs came home with nothing, 4 tiny blue cod and a large Bronze whaler shark only things that showed interest in our bait, will have to try again. Otago only had the Ranfuly shield for a week, were at a friends house on Sunday eating their whitebait fritters and watched as Hawkes bay won by one point. Our trip becoming very real, Vicki picking up tickets from Marianne this afternoon. Loving following your trip, thankyou Ed Bright.

HI Ed, Thanks for the news re the Ranfurly Shield, hadn't picked up on that. HB will be pretty impressed. The whitebait fritters sounded good too!!
We are looking forward to hearing all your travel news, need to know the address of Vicki's blog. Not sure why the comments aren't showing on some computers.
