Monday October 6

October 6 Monday, Amish Country Campsite, Ohio

Today has been a most interesting day with many varied and interesting interludes, and the camera has been busy….it may be a long blog! Also finally gave up and spotted a “Best Cuts” salon, and had the mop cropped. Tried to make it last until I got home, but couldn’t cope any more, so feel much better, although not the most stylish cut!
The area nearby Mercer is Amish country, so this morning we did a tour through the country side on our way to Ohio. First stopped in the small town of Volant, where all the stores were decorated with the Halloween theme…they had a “Pumpkin” festival over the weekend! Spotted some fisherman fly fishing in the river that ran through town, and the reflections from the bridge with the autumn colours was quite special. Ian had a chat with them, and they were catching and releasing rainbow trout all of 6” – 9”!
Took a side road through the farming community and spotted a number of Amish out working on their farms, around their houses and even a school. The Amish are not happy having their photos taken, so I took all the shots through the open windows in the back of Ruakiwi as Ian drove past. This is an Old Order Armish community, and they are dressed in blue or black, and their carriages have brown tops, evidently for economy reasons.
Took the Interstate into Ohio, and stopped at a Welcome Centre just through the border to collect maps and brochures. As we only have 4 days in this state, have decided to concentrate in the northern area, and our first direction was South West to the Holmes County which not only has a huge Amish community, but is also very beautiful countryside, with rolling hills. Firstly though we stopped in Salem for lunch…and a haircut!
Also noticed the price of fuel…the lowest yet. The highest price we paid was in the top North of Michigan in July at $4.19/gallon…and today we saw it at $3.09/gallon….a huge drop, so nice to see prices going down for a change!
The next surprise was as we were passing through the small town of Richville, we spotted a number of vintage cars with people sitting around them,….so parked Ruakiwi and went to investigate. Turns out that on the 3rd Monday of the month a car show was held in a grassed area across the road from the local bar. Evidently 80 – 100 cars will arrive for a gathering between 4 and 7, and people chat and have a meal at the restaurant. There were some amazing cars, including a Model A Ford coupe, enjoyed chatting with their owners who were so pleased to tell us all about them…and have their photos taken as well.
Continued on through some really “pretty” country, the leaves are taking on some colours but understand that the season is a bit late this year.
The camp tonight is a real gem, run by Mennonites, and only $21 for the night, with the cleanest facilites we have seen.
