Thursday September 18
September 18 Thursday, Timberland Acres RV Park, Ellsworth
We don’t have particularly fond memories of Saint John, after arriving last night to pretty grim conditions, then this morning it was grey, light drizzle and blowing quite hard…not a pretty picture. Such a shame as I am sure it is a very nice city, be we caught it on a “bad hair day”. There were two huge passenger ships in port as we drove out on the freeway.
The sky lightened as we headed further south, and really enjoyed the drive through some quite remote country, lots of forests and small lakes. We were heading for the border into US, but decided to take a detour to St Andrews….a very good call. It is a tourist town on the Bay of Fundy, with a very good shopping area with top quality goods, a harbour that takes tourists out to see the whales and many very old well maintained homes. We even struck the market day. The sun started to peak out as we parked Ruakiwi. Set off on foot to have a look around, but it was still really cold..we hear tonight on the weather that it has been the coldest day for this area since in the 40’s! I picked up a really nice scarf …and promptly wrapped it around my neck! Stopped at a bakery/café about midday and decided to make it a lunch stop..another good call. I had seafood chowder with lots of scallops, prawns and fish, something I had wanted to try.
We got to the US border at St Stephens and had to queue for almost half and hour to go through. Took about 5 minutes of checking our details, food and alchohol in the van, and after checking our passports waived us through. Seems strange to be back in the states after almost 2 months…and back to imperial measurements again. Couldn’t get over the price of fuel…in the 7 weeks we have been over the border it has dropped from $4.20 a gallon to just over $3.60, a lot cheaper than in Canada where their fuel price has hardly dropped. Also back in Atlantic time zone so watches back an hour.
The day was sunny now with clear blue skies. We took route 9 East towards Bangor, which was a great drive through a very sparsely populated area, covered in trees… they are really starting to show their autumn colours especially with the afternoon sun glowing through. Finished the 200+ mile day by heading south to Ellsworth. For the first time we have had the heater going tonight, an overnight frost is predicted!
