Friday September 19
September 19 Friday, Lakeside Kampground, Winthrop, ME
We were very pleased to turn the heater on this morning…it was a frost overnight, but the day was stunning…a real “Bluebird” one. It seems quite strange as four years ago we travelled through part of this area when we did a 12 day trip around New England by car. We had flown to Boston after a trip to see my brother in Atlanta, and had thoroughly enjoyed the area…it was early October and there was a lot more colour in the trees.
Ian had visited the famous Liberty Tool Company last time, well know for all its second hand and antique tools and was keen to take another visit.
It was such a great drive all through the area today, the trees are looking majestic, huge oaks and maples just starting to colour a bit, but didn’t see any farming.
Just out of Ellsworth we had to stop at the Big Chicken Barn…the biggest antique store we have every seen….and it was full of great treasures…yes something is coming home that is likely to cause a few weight problems!
Stopped in Bucksport for supplies, and had lunch beside the Peneboscot River, underneath Fort Knox. We had travelled along this road in 2004, and had stopped to see the construction of the new Penboscot Bridge…today we travelled over it, such an amazing construction.
The next hours journey was an Antique hunters paradise with shops and stalls all along the road. We finally stopped in the little village of Searsmont at a shop specialising in tools…Ian had a good look while I wandered around the village. One could spend days in this area, as there are so many places to browse through.
Back into Liberty, it really is a little town that time has forgotten, but is a drawcard for anyone looking for old tools. The old truck I had taken photos of 4 years ago was still there…looking much older! Ian came out empty handed, but thoroughly enjoyed wandering around.
Arrived at the campground just before 5, and got a great spot right on the edge of Lake Annabesscook, a small but pretty lake. The wind had got up and was quite cold, so ended up with an inside dinner tonight.
