Wednesday August 10, Visit to Copenhagen

This is the scene that everyone knows Copenhagen for!

Tonight, we are two rather weary kiwis after a full on fabulous day in Copenhagen. It really was a whistle stop tour, and I think you would need a few more days to even touch the surface but we have come away with a great experience.

We set off this morning at 9am, and caught the train after the walk to the station. Needed help from a “youngie” to work out the ticket system but we managed and soon on the train for the 20 minute trip to the central station. Found a kiosk in the station where we got maps and also bought tickets for a hop on hop off bus tour as well as a boat tour. Decided that this really is a better option for us these days than pounding the pavements all day. The girl in the kiosk was great and explained where to find the bus and where we needed to get off to do the boat trip. Perfect, found the bus and we were away. Were a bit disappointed at the start as we were travelling through the modern part of the city, picking up passengers from the hotels but soon we got into the older areas and the city came to life. The architecture and the style of buildings are wonderful.

Had a bit of a blip which wasted about an hour of our time when the bus commentator said that those doing boat tours should get off at the next stop. A number of us did only to discover it was for the wrong boat tour. Ended up walking and finally found where our boat tour departed from.

This was in the canal of what is probably the most famous spot in Copenhagen that we all see, with the row of brightly painted houses, it really looks amazing.  With the clear blue sky and the bright colours it was something special. Thoroughly enjoyed the hour long canal trip, what a way to view this city. Along with the huge number of very special old buildings there are a number of very modern buildings that are so striking.

By the time we got back it was well after one and were ready for lunch. So many places to choose from and with the temperatures at 25 we found a restaurant with outside seating in the shade. And turned out to be a great choice as they served traditional Danish food which was really good. And so was the beer!

Wandered through the streets, enjoying the city life. I think one of the lasting impressions I will have of Copenhagen is the bikes, everyone gets around by bike and the cycle lanes are as wide as the car lanes. There are every style of bike you can imagine, and so many cargo bikes and child carriers. Everywhere there are bike parks, just laden with cycles, not sure how people find, and untangle their bikes but guess this has been going on for generations. Finally got back to the bus route and picked up our hop on bus. By now we were feeling very hot and a tad weary and enjoyed the ride back to the end.

There were so many places that looked great that we just didn’t get to see, but feel we touched the surface. Navigated the railway station without any mishaps and we were soon back on a train home, it was getting on to 7 when we finally got back to camp, weary but have had a good day.

Arriving at the central railway station.

How on earth do you find your bike?

Typical baby bike!

The architect centre, some describe as the ugliest
in Copenhagen.

Loved these new apartments.

Its hot work being a tourist!!

Riding the canal is a great
place to people watch.

The amazing Opera House with a roof that
cantilevers out over 40 metres.
