Thursday July 14, Sandslän

A very gloomy view from today's camp.

A bit of a wet night with thunder, lightning and rain and temperatures have once again dropped. The forecast for the next few days is not very good with much the same weather. Decision made to find a camp to stay put and have a few lazy days. We have done quite a bit of driving over the past week or so and seems a good idea.

After a visit to Lidl in town, we headed south for about an hour to this place that we found at a harbour, and it had washing machines and drier, which are much needed. The weather on the drive down the E4 produced heavy rain, hail, thunder and lightning and temperatures of 11 degrees…back to an NZ winters day!

Sandslän is a very intriguing place and feels in a time warp. It is here where the Angerman River meets the sea and since discovered there is quite a bit of history about the place. In 1870 logs were floated down the river from areas further north and a huge log sorting area was established. At its height about 700 workers were employed during the summer and a number of workers barracks and dining centre were built and it was one of the largest timber sorting areas in the world.  It was 1982 when this all closed but some of the buildings still remain as well as the control tower in the river in front of our parking area.  Hopefully if the weather eases tomorrow we will check out the museum in one of the old buildings.

Met Lillian, the harbour master’s wife this afternoon and had a long chat with her about the history. It seems very quiet at the marina at the moment and she said it has certainly not been busy and they are putting it down to fuel prices.

Late last night before the storm came in.

The ski jump leaving town this morning.

They certainly like cantilevered buildings!

...and baby calling back!

The very friendly Lillian, who spoke very
good English.

I'm in catchup mode, persistant rain here today (Tuesday). A good idea to rest for a day or two and recharge.
