Saturday July 16. Sandsvall

Sundsvall

It’s really been a day of contrasts. Woke this morning to more rain and wind. A bit of a sluggish start and did all the van ablutions, emptying and filling, then back on the road again after a rather nice rest day yesterday.

It was still raining and blowing a gale when we stopped in Kramfors and I popped into the ICA and picked up a few fresh supplies then down to the E4 and the High Coast Bridge that we had heard about. This crosses the Angermanälven River which we had been staying on, and is the third longest suspension bridge in Scandinavia. It is 1.8km long and the wind gusts today made it not the most pleasant of crossings, Ruakiwi has a pretty big sail! We were very pleased to get to the other side and park in the large parking area with a great view of the bridge.  Had lunch and a wander around and the rain eased and the weather looked a lot brighter.

Decided to head south for another hour to the town of Sandsvall and a good parking area for motorhomes right on the harbour and a short walking distance to town. Did a bit of research in my “Rough Guide to Sweden” as we drove down and found out that in 1888 this town which was home to a big timber industry was burnt to the ground after a spark from a steam boat lit the town brewery then spread through the town. 9000 people lost their homes. Within a short time, the designing and rebuilding of the town started, entirely of stone and in 10 years it was rebuilt. The streets are wide and walking through it this evening we were very impressed with the architecture, so different to what we have seen in Sweden. By now the weather had improved and the wind had eased and we enjoyed wandering the streets and taking in the sights. The town was full of painted dinosaurs, all shapes and designs, guess it must be a summer theme. Stopped for a beer and later spotted a very popular Italian Restaurant and enjoyed a very good pizza and some gelato. It’s been another good day.

A very dismal start to the day!

Sounds like a lot of Europe is in the grip of a heat wave so wind & rain might be ok 👍

The dino sculptures remind me of the giraffes in Chch (google it). So stag doos are the same the world over then :) I bet a sigh of relief once over that bridge, gosh 1.8 km, a biggie.

Sandsvall Dragons basketball team perhaps? That bridge must have caused you to do a bit more washing that day!! Definitely wouldn't have called that experience fun. Right... Back to my catch up. And to enjoy the first but of sun since last weekend. Oops! Gone already!
