Wednesday June 22, Cuxshaven

This rather unusual looking ship was transporting
turbine blades for wind farms.

There was a really beautiful sunset last night and I popped out about 10.30pm and took a few photos as the light was dropping a bit. As we keep travelling north the days are getting longer and longer. It was 11pm when we went to bed and there was still quite a bit of light.

Got chatting with our neighbour this morning, a single guy in a small camper car. He was German but spoke excellent English. He worked as a paramedic on offshore oil rigs and his hobby was rock climbing which often came in very handy on the rigs! Anyway, he suggested that we call into Bremerhaven, a port town on the way to Cuxshaven, he thought we would find it a very interesting place. As always, we appreciate local knowledge and as it was on our way detoured. Turned out to be quite a big town, had a few wrong turns before getting down to the harbour but it didn’t really do much for us so continued north to Cuxshaven to a place where Conny and Hiiten had stayed and recommended. The site really is just a large parking space right out on a point of the harbour where you can watch all the huge boats entering the Elbe River and either heading to Hamburg or along the Kiel Canal. Fascinating and have been using the Marine Traffic App to identify the vessels and see where they have come from. The campsite is busy and can hold 100 motorhomes, and tonight there are not many spare spaces.

After finally arriving, decided to wander along the harbour for a fish lunch, found a nice restaurant in one of the older style waterside hotels and such a good call. I had a really nice baked cod dish with mushrooms, potatoes and a feta topping, really tasty. Ian had a mixed fish dish which got the thumbs up too. And no need to cook dinner tonight after such a good meal, suits me fine!

Back home and decided I needed to catch up on the washing, nice breeze and sunny so it is now hanging on the clothes rack out the bedroom window. Booked the ferry to Sweden today, it’s a 6 hour crossing and noticed that a number of crossings were already booked out, got a great price for next Tuesday afternoon. Job done!

Wonderful sky last night

Such a busy shipping area

Lots of windfarms on the drive this morning

Beach shelters line this area...guessing it gets
quite windy!

Yummy lunch

The motorhome area overlooking "everything"!

I am following along with Google maps and find my geography is a bit vague. I was surprised Sweden is 6 hours on the ferry. A blipper in Lapland has 24 hours of light at present. Shame about the lens.
