Lubeck

It’s really been a day of two halves, with more mundane chores first and then a wonderful evening in Lubeck, but the best news for me is that tonight my lens seems to be working again, why and how I don’t know but I have my fingers crossed and will be very gentle with it.

We left the canal this morning with Lubeck as our destination, it was a good drive, but rather ordinary scenery wise. First stop in town was a laundry I had found mentioned in the Park4Night app. Parked in the nearby Aldi carpark, loaded the washing, but it took some time to work out how to set them up and then to pay. It turned out to be more expensive than in the past, as the machines weren’t that big and I needed to use two, and the wash cycles took 50 minutes. While that happened, I popped into Adli and got a few things, then sat in the Laundromat while it dried.  We really wanted to stock up well before we go to Sweden so took the opportunity to go to Rewe, a large supermarket not far away. But it was so big, we seemed to walk so far looking for what we wanted, and then still ended up not finding everything. Very frustrating and won’t fall into that trap again, smaller supermarkets are certainly easier to find what we need.

The day had turned really humid and warm, and we still needed to do the van ablutions which were at a nearby large and very busy shopping centre. The navigator managed perfectly (!) and the job was done. By now it was 3.30 so set Jilly to a camping area very close to the centre of Lubeck, an historic city which we had read about. Found a spot in the middle of a cobbled yard with about 30 other campers around, and quite close to the roads leading into town, but it’s a safe and designated campspot.

Put our feet up for awhile and chatted to our friendly Swiss neighbours and got our second wind! Headed over the bridge and into town to have a look around. What an amazing town, that has its heritage with the Hanseatic Movement and the buildings that have survived certainly show this architecture. The town is built on an “island” and has been called the Venice of the Baltic. We wandered along the waterway to the very impressive main entrance to town, then a stop to “cool’ us down, before heading back to a Fish Restaurant we had read about close to our camper, and a really nice fish meal. The baked cod I had was so fresh and just superb.

Back to the camper and spent a pleasant time sitting outside with our Swiss neighbours. Tomorrow we will head back into town and explore some more.

A very happy van...loved the name,
a very ethical alternative!

The historical entrance to town.

The cod was so thick and cooked
perfectly.

Evening light.

Hanging out!

A good old Landie ready for the road!

Wonderful pix Meg and lovely memories for us. We sang on tour with the Auckland Bach Choir in Lubeck in 2000.
Also went across to Travemunde from there. Very interesting time. Jn D
