Thursday June 23, Horsten, On the Kiel Canal

The Amadea cruising past!

Another bluebird day and not a cloud in the sky. Did the van ablutions before heading off to the ferry that crosses the Elbe River from Wischafen to Gluckstadt, taking the scenic route through the large area of river flats. This is a very fertile area judging by the fruit trees and vegetables being grown. Noticed a number of cherry trees but no sign of any street stalls to purchase them. A perfect morning to be cruising and taking in the scenery.

Arrived at the ferry with a huge queue in front of us, including many trucks and campers. Thought it would be ages but only had about a 20 minute wait and we were loaded. Didn’t realise that they had four ferries plying the river for the 20 minute trip. Cost was €28. Soon we were off and the scenic route that I had seen on the map and wanted to take was closed but Jilly had it sorted and we had an uneventful trip. In 2016 we stayed at this spot with Conny and Hitten and just loved it, with its view of the Kiel Canal just in front, it seems surreal to see these huge ships passing through. The Canal was completed in 1896 and widened at a later date, its 98 km long and over 32,000 ships pass through each year….thanks Mr Google!!!

Decided to return and spend a few days and do some cycling along the Canal. By the time we had a very late lunch, the temperatures had risen to 26 degrees and it seemed a good idea to leave the cycling till the morning in the cool! Ian ended up sorting out his “garage” to make a bit more room for the bikes, and I had a play with my camera!

Having dinner tonight and surprised to see a cruise ship pass by, The Amadea, which I found out was returning to Bremerhaven before departing tomorrow evening for a Norwegian Cruise.

Just having a catch-up on your travels. Early morning here in Townsville and sleep is not happening for me.
