Sunday June 19, Munster

The city centre full of bikers.

Woke to much cooler weather and quite a nice breeze. Had a good chat to our ”neighbour” this morning, a German but he works for an American company and speaks excellent English. I spotted him out with his camera, always a great point of conversation for me! He is currently shooting with a Fuji XT3 (for my camera mates) but seems to have quite an arsenal of cameras and lenses. We chatted about photography for quite some time.

Ambled into town on our bike’s late morning and what an experience. Munster is known to be the biking capital of Germany and they are not wrong, there were bikes everywhere and the city is crisscrossed with bike lanes as well as a circular “Promenade” surrounding the city. It is tree lined and only for cyclists and walkers, and makes getting around so much easier. Had Kamoot app set up on my bike and we were able to see where we had been and where we were going, although sometimes it didn’t quite help, my sense of direction can be a bit hit and miss!. Such an interesting city with beautiful old cathedrals and facades on many of the buildings. A lot of the inner streets were cobbled, not so smooth on the bike but very grateful for my new bike pants!

Riding around the promenade we came across a very interesting installation of five bodies lazing around a pond. The sign read that it was by Nicole Eismann and entitled “Sketch for a Fountain” 2017. It tickled my fancy and have included some photos below.

I guess being a Sunday, families were out and about on their bikes, lazing in the many parks and just enjoying the nice weather. We were in the centre of town and could hear someone speaking over a loud speaker and before we knew it everyone was ushered to the side of the road and then two thousand motorbikes came through and parked in the streets around us. Didn’t really find out what it was all about, although a lady said they came from all over Germany. It was quite a sight. There are cafes everywhere and we sat outside on the pavement with some cold beer, people watching and enjoying a late lunch. It wasn’t until we settled in that we realised they only served upmarket hamburgers, but they were very nice.

Another good day on the road, and hoping to catch some better photos of the horses when they get let out tonight.

This installation really put a smile on my face!

Spotted this bird, its beak looked like a carrot,
not sure what sort of heron it is?

Lovely to have the blog to follow again. Good to meet a Fuji shooter, we are few. They are onto XT-4 now but my XT -1 keeps on. Those Ferrari owners don't worry about the price of fuel.

I think one of those sculptures would look good down by the lake or beside your garden pond😀
Those bikes would have been impressive!! We’re they mostly bMW’s?
Chilly and grey in NZ but tomorrow is the shortest day( my wedding anniversary!!)

The nudies are very cool (literally too). I do enjoy my travel fix most mornings Meg, thanks. The bikes would have been some sight and noise too I expect.

Great read Meg. Munster looks like an interesting city. Love the statues - have seen similar elsewhere in Europe. Must be a EU thing!!!
