Great skies as we meandered along our detour this morning. |
Needed to pop another layer on
this morning, wondering if summer is over. Our planned stop today was at Soest
but spotted a motorhome supply shop near our route and needed to top up on a
few things including toilet chemicals…the stuff the keeps the cassette smelling
okay!!!
Needed to head east but the
bridge over to town will not take vehicles wider than 2.1 metres which meant a
15 km detour north to cross another bridge then return on the other side of the
river! Continued on Route 64 towards Paderborn only to discover there was road
works on a railway crossing and we had to take a detour which took us a long
way south before heading back to pick up the main road. But we did see a lot of
the countryside and enjoyed the drive. Lots of wee villages and large farming
operations. Finally got back to the main road and it was all plain sailing. Huge
windfarms on the hills we drove through before dropping down to the flat land
with much cropping.
Stopped at the camperstore just
north of Lippstadt and after a lunch stop continued on to the Stellplatz which
is at a motel in the town of Soest. Nothing pretty but very functional with all
facilities including free wifi for €8.
Settled in but Ian decided not to
walk into town with me, his back has been not that flash so he opted for a
relax with his feet up. I headed off with a town map and within 10 minutes had
arrived in the centre.
What a great town, it really surprised
me. Lots of little winding streets, half timbered houses and a very vibrant pedestrian
only shopping centre and market square. I wandered around enjoying the
atmosphere and did a bit of shopping for the family. The old church dated from around
the 12 century and had a wonderful old door and some extremely old stone tiles
with detailed sculpture in the foyer. I think this is a town I would like to
come back and spend more time in.
