Thursday August 22, Marnemoende Marina on the Ijssel River

Anyone for cheese!

Finally the weather has settled after quite a period of grey showery days, and it is so nice to have clear skies with temperatures in the mid 20’s.
I popped into the village this morning and picked up some buns before we set off to a campspot we had read about just west of Utrecht. This area of Holland has a number of big cities so opted to use the motorways. Arrived at the marina about midday and it was very full but we managed to find a spot on the grass, the river side spots were all taken. But still very good with nice views of the activity on the river. Lots of private canal boats passing by as  well as a number of “runabouts”, guessing this really nice weather has got people out on the water.
Sat outside for lunch, soaking up the sunshine then bikes out for a trip to the nearby town of IJsselstein. Followed the numbered route that passed through fields of maize and farm land.
IJsselstein is a really nice town, lots of canals and water running through it and the main area is pedestrian and cycles only. In fact the whole town is so quiet as there are so few cars, everyone gets around on their bikes. Cycled through the vibrant centre and had to stop at a cheese shop, just so many rounds of cheese and a really friendly guy. We bought a piece of local farmers cheese which is made from raw milk and tastes so good.
Meandered through the streets soaking up the atmosphere, this is such a different culture and way of life, with cycling their main transport and all the towns and countryside are crisscrossed with bike paths. Cyclists are as important as cars. The houses are so tidy and there are some beautiful gardens. Took a different route back to camp that passed by many dairy farms. Everything is so green and immaculately kept, the cows mainly live in huge barns but were out grazing today. It really was a very enjoyable ride, and so much nicer with the sun shining.
Have seen a number of houses with thatched roofs.
Vibrant town centre

A foodies heaven.

the big cheese.

..and of course a windmill!

An idyllic spot for camp.
