Saturday August 12th, Trier

Wet..wet..wet!!!

Oooops, summer really disappeared today, rained all night and this morning and down to 13 degrees. Think we are getting a taste of what New Zealand has had this winter. Enjoyed our stay at Saarburg, did the ablutions before heading off this morning for Trier, on the Moselle River, less than 30 minutes away.
Needed to do the groceries and spotted a large Edeka store as we passed through Konz. This was our favourite German supermarket when we were here last year. As I walked around I realised how much easier it had been in France with my little bit of school girl French, I could sort of read the labels. Today I felt back to square one, relying on the pictures on the packets to understand what I was buying! But stocked up on some yummy salamis and sausages. And enjoying the German bread again, which is much denser than French bread but has a real nutty flavour. Pushed the trolley back to the van in the pouring rain – can’t believe this is summer!
Edeka - yeah!
Ian needed some oil for the van so found a Mercedes dealer near to the camp, they were so efficient and had the oil without any problems. Arrived at the camp beside the Moselle where we had stayed last year just before midday.
By the time we had lunch the rain had stopped so got the bikes out and off into Trier. What a breeze as last year we walked in and it was quite a distance, then had to turn around and walk home, well over 8 kms. The town was very busy and everyone was bundled up in jeans and jackets. There were a number of buskers around including a wonderful family group – The Miller Family. So enjoyed listening to them, as did the big crowd that had gathered. There was also a market going on in the square. The town was just so much busier than when we were here in October last year.
Then the rain came again, put our coats on and headed back to river and then the camp.  The town is full of cycle paths so no problems finding our way back. Tomorrow’s forecast is for a fine day and sun…..we will not hold our breath!
Interesting I was looking through my posts from last year and realise that with biking so much more I am not taking as many photos as I did when we walked. Guess there are ups and downs.
Looks like animal prints will be in this winter!

The Miller Family - wonderful
