Friday August 11th Saarburg, Germany

Wildflowers along the cycle path.

Another day when we didn’t see the sun but at least there was no rain until this evening, even the washing dried hanging on the frame out of the window. Bikes out and off to Konz, on what have to be the best cycle paths we have been on, with the added advantage of being able to ride down one side of the river and come back on the other. Couldn’t get over all the wildflowers on the roadsides. A most interesting ride passing through a number of small towns and grapes growing on the steep hillsides.
Marina near Saarburg - the blue sky popped out for a few
minutes but it didn't last!

We stopped at the lock near Kanzem, amazed to see the lift in it…Ian reckoned it was at least 15 metres. On our way back we saw a small house boat going down in it….they really were a long way down and guess they were pleased to see the lock gates open.
This really doesn't show the depth of the
lock - didn't take a photo with the boat in
it!!!
Spotted a NZ flag on a bike just near Konz, turns out the couple were from Nelson and had been riding around France since early May, with a month in Italy in a hire car. It is a small world. Found the town centre in Konz and quite surprised at how few people there were around, although Konz is not really a tourist town like Saarburg. Had been hanging out for some schnitzel since arriving back in Germany, found a nice restaurant and sat outside with a glass of Riesling and enjoyed a very nice pork schnitzel with a mushroom sauce. The best part is that I don’t have to cook dinner tonight!!!
It really has been a most enjoyable day’s riding, loving the cycleways and their very clear “road” signs.

Fields of wild flowers.
