Sunday November 6 - Harlingen, Netherlands

Our view to the port of Harlingen

Three months ago we arrived in Rotterdam in the evening, and the following morning, we hit the motorway and drove to Germany in three hours, in a hurry so that we could reach Norway for summer. Our only memories were scenes through the window on a wet day.
Today we crossed the border from Germany on a very cold (max 9 degrees) but sunny late autumn day with a few brief showers. We took all the lesser roads passing through small towns and being a Sunday the roads were surprisingly quiet, and drove 250 kms which took us all day!
It was a real eye opener, we really loved what we saw. We didn’t expect to see so many large farms and big areas of trees and everywhere there was a sense of tidiness, people are proud of what they have. Surprised to see the amount of new commercial/industrial building that has occurred in recent years making it appear a very modern country. And of course, everywhere were canals, rivers, lakes and drains along with so many bikes.
We made a stop in the town of Havendijk when we noticed a large number of older boats in the canal in the middle of town along with a big marina and enjoyed a walk around. Had read about the very popular small town of Giethoorn, with its small thatched roof cottages and numerous waterways and little bridges and seemed worth a stop. But felt a bit disappointed, maybe because of the time of the year with very few people around and everything looking a bit “tired” so after a wander around the streets we were back on the road.
Headed to the port of Harlingen on the west coast where there was a Stellplatz listed. A really good spot which we have shared with about 10 others, overlooking the port and a loch with plenty of action happening. The town is a short walk away so will head over there in the morning before we leave.
Caught....topping up with water this morning in amonst the autumn leaves.
These Sani Stations have everything a "Campervanner" needs, from fresh water, to places to
dump your wastes.

A barn that houses dairy cows. They are just so tidy, and as the
grass is cut and fed and not grazed the paddocks are pristine.

Lots of thatched roof houses...a quick snap from the van window.

A couple of East European cars

Little boats tied up in a canal in Giethoorn

...and more boats!

...and even more boats!

Sorry...more autumn leaves, but feel that this could well be the last of them.

Canals everywhere
