One of the many harbours in Harlingen |
46 years ago, on a warm summers
day we were married in Auckland, and tonight on a freezing cold but clear
evening in Holland we are going out to have a celebration dinner, for something
that is really worth celebrating.
Woke this morning to rain and
thought that would be the end of the walk into town, but luckily by mid-morning
the rain cleared and although it was very cold we rugged up with hats and
coats. Such a great place with boats everywhere. Many are traditional Dutch
sailing boats with fold down keels.
We ambled around the harbours
and along the sea wall before heading back into town, loved the shops but most
were shut and then interpreted the signs saying they open at 1pm on Mondays!
Did a bit of shopping and a nice lunch at a warm café before heading back to
Ruakiwi and on the road again.
A much shorter drive this
afternoon taking a road across the dyke bordering the Zuider Zee with a stop
half way across to check the view of the fishing boats out on the North Sea. They
have huge nets hanging out each side which I think may be purse nets, obviously
catching fish by the amount of birds following. We wound around the edge of the
Zuider Zee, although no views as we were below the Stop Bank. Lots of huge
cattle barns and then into an area of market gardening before arriving at the
port of Enkhuizen and an overnight camper stop on the harbour. With the
temperatures, according to Ruakiwi, of only 5 degrees outside we just took a
short walk and found a likely restaurant very close by where we can walk to
later, and will leave the exploring until tomorrow.
