Tuesday July 19, Palousse WA

Thankfully the heat of yesterday has left us and tonight a very pleasant 22 degrees although a strong wind and very overcast. Maybe in for some rain.

Have had quite a big day today as we set off heading on a northern loop to explore what they call the Palousse, a large area between Idaho and Washington. I had seen pictures of this area, wonderful landscapes of rolling hills which are all cropped and was keen to take a look.

It was a very pleasant drive meandering along initially through forested lands and the towns of Kendrick, Deary and St Maries before coming to the cropping areas of Plummer, Oakesdale and Palousse. Such a contrast to the country we passed through yesterday. The small old towns with their wonderful brick buildings at times looking as though the world has left them behind. Found a good brochure at an information centre that included a map of a route to take through the area, and also bought a book called Off the Beaten Path Idaho…a guide to unique places which gave us some good ideas.

Found a little bit of interesting wildlife as well, spotted an Osprey nest at the top of a bridge support and saw what looked to be Mum and a couple of chicks. Then as we came out of the White Pine Forest area a young moose was grazing on the side of the road, able to drive reasonably close to get a photo out the window. Rather surprised as not expecting to see them in this area.

Ian was feeling a bit weary after driving almost 200 miles, many of which were pretty windy and narrow when we spotted this little Lions Club RV Camp beside the Palousse River. Electricity laid on as well as firewood, and a $7 donation which we paid at the store in town. Brilliant.
