Sunday July 17, Clearwater National Forest, ID
Farewells again to the Massey’s late this morning but not for long, they will be in NZ for six weeks during the world cup.
Last night we had a good chat with those at the barbecue and got some great ideas about travelling in the northern part of Idaho, quite excited as everyone said that we will love this state. So we set out on Route 12 on the scenic highway from Lolo and over the Lolo Pass. Summer is really here today, hazy blue skies, a gentle breeze, cicadas in the trees and the temperatures reaching 34 degrees.
It has been a really nice drive and the roads haven’t been too busy either considering it is a Sunday. We stopped at the top of the pass at the National Forest Information Centre just through the border into Idaho, a really nice log construction building. Lots of information to read about this area especially as it is part of the Lewis and Clark Trail, who pioneered the route through to the West in the 1800’s. They recommended we take a look at the Packer Meadows not far from the centre. During the early summer it is covered in blue when the purple camas are in bloom, but these had just about finished although there was a yellow wild flower in bloom.
The road dropped down following the Lochsa River, quite stunning as it rushed down over the rocks and the forest rose above.
Found a really nice spot to camp in the Whitehouse Forest Service Campground right beside the river and lightly shaded by trees…..and only $8 for the night! A good place to spend the last part of a very hot afternoon.
