Monday September 13, Dungeness Recreation Area, WA

Woke to thick fog rolling in from the Strait of Juan de Fuca and it hung around for much of the day. A good day to wander around Port Angeles after dealing with a few chores and supplies and a visit to the library for wifi.
Enjoyed the old town down by the harbour, lots of murals, pieces of sculpture lining the streets, buildings painted up and some really interesting quaint stores. The harbour was just about invisible, could hardly see more than 30 metres but knew the ships were out, the fog horns sounding quite eerie.
Spoke to the bookseller about the Twilight “hysteria” that we had observed yesterday and also noticed around Port Angeles. Evidently there is a real cult following for these books, a bit similar to Harry Potter although not on the same level, and a number of films have been made. They are set in the area around Forks and Port Angeles and it has proved to be quite a financial bonanza particularly for Forks.
Took a walk around the Fine Arts Center, which was closed on Mondays, and the Webster’s Wood Art Park which surrounds it. Some quite interesting art in amongst the trees.
Tonight we are at a recreation area at the base of a 5 mile spit that runs out to a lighthouse, a really nice spot nestled in amongst hedges which by the shape of them indicates that the area can be hit by some pretty strong winds. Today though there is not a breathe of wind and the fog is still hanging around,
We went for a good walk through the trees and out onto the spit, but couldn’t see very far although the sun was trying to shine. The sunset tonight though was really special, the fog was still lingering on the water and the distant hills were just showing through. It is a very clear evening and got quite cold as soon as the sun dropped.
