Wednesday September 3

Sorry...this is out of order!

September 3 Wednesday Harbour Lights Campground, Pictou, Nova Scotia

We arrived in our 5th Canadian state this afternoon, Nova Scotia, which we have heard so much about and really looking forward to exploring.
It was a fine sunny morning as we left camp and continued meandering towards the main PEI city, Charlottetown. A very enjoyable drive along the coast. Spotted a Woodworking Gallery, and called in, hoping that it wasn’t going to be just another tourist shop with tacky souvenirs, but it was a real find. There were one off pieces of furniture, manufactured on site in maple and cherry in very contemporary designs, along with some other pieces of local pottery and craft, all of a very high quality. Ruakiwi had a few extra things added when we left!
The cloud started closing in, and rain was looking close, so made the decision to not stop in Charlottetown, and head for Wood Islands where the ferry to Pictou, Nova Scotia departs. We did enjoy the trip through the northern part of PEI, the country side reminding us of New Zealand, and saw quite a few cattle grazing outside.
Third time lucky, and after an hour we were loading onto the ferry…in the rain. The Confederation is the biggest of the ferries we had been on and looked to be quite new. There are 2 ways of travelling to Prince Edward Island…via the bridge or by the ferry further east, and you only pay when you leave. The cost for the bridge was $42, and we paid $82 for the 1 ¼ hour ferry trip, but it meant less travelling for us. It was a very good trip over, and by the time we landed at 4 the rain had stopped.
Pictou really surprised us, it is a very old town with strong Scottish heritage, and the buildings and the narrow streets reflect this. Even though the weather was grey, the town had a good feeling to it. We popped into the Grohmann knife factory, very interesting and had a little look around, but plan to go back in the morning and have wander around town a little more.
