September 4 Thursday, Cabot Trails Campground, Baddeck, NS

After a day of quite a bit of rain, that really has interrupted our travels, tonight is a clear night with a red sky, which augers well for a great day tomorrow (as predicted by the weather guys), as we are all set to head around the Cabot Trail. Everyone tells us it is a must, so we will see. It follows the coast around some spectacular scenery, so we wanted to make sure that the weather was good before we started out.
Last night we had a lot of rain, so everything was pretty muddy and murky as we left this morning, deciding not to stop in Pictou, but head East. After following the old road we stopped at a fishing village at Arisaig, where most of the boats were in port, but it had a really clean professional look to it. Made a brew of coffee and enjoyed the scenery and chatted with an English couple who were also on the road.
The rain really came in so we headed into Antigonish, a very old Celtic town with a university that had courses in Celtic studies. Filled up with fuel…which was the most expensive so far in Canada at $1.32/Litre…then found the credit card wouldn’t work. Luckily had enough cash to cover, but most concerned. Found wifi and checked the bank, but as expected, everything was in order. So went to the bank and used their machine, as we have been doing to withdraw cash, and the same thing, no luck. Felt a little concerned, and chatted with the tellers, who thought that maybe there was a glitch back in NZ. Popped back to the van where we had a credit card for another account stashed away, and went back to the bank. Very relieved to find that it worked, then tried the original again, and it worked too…so obviously there was a problem in NZ. But a lesson to keep some cash in reserve for such situations.
With the rain pouring down, opted out of the scenic route and took the Trans Canada highway, and after a detour for a quick lunch stop on the side of the road, crossed over the causeway onto Cape Breton Island. Filled the propane tank, and the weather was still grotty so headed straight up the middle to Baddeck. It was a very pleasant drive through some forestry areas, some of the first we have seen, then around the Bras d’Or Lake, and arrived at the campground about 4. A very well kept ground, and able to catch up on some washing, even managed a bit of a walk. Hope tomorrows travels areaas good as anticipated.
