September 2 Silver Sands Camp, North Rustico

What a change, woke early this morning and heard the fishing boats leaving port, and got out of bed to see a blue sky and no wind…a complete contrast to yesterday. We were ready to get on the road again and were heading west by 8.30. The drive up the coast was quite disappointing, rather desolate and not the fishing villages we expected to see. Decided to not go right to the cape but headed back down the centre road. Stopped for a coffee at a basket weaving gallery, a local tradition. They were using thin strips of birch wood, very green and damp, and the handles were maple. Would have loved to have bought one home…but not easy to pack! Back into Summerside and a few supplies, and down to the harbour for lunch. Wandered around, a very pleasant place to spend a bit of time in the sun.
We set off North to explore the central part of the island, and what a pleasant surprise, the country was so tidy and picturesque, with potato and grain crops, lots of green and very tidy homes. And in between were little inlets with fishing ports, where they were harvesting mussels and eels as well as lobster in their two month season in the spring. With a high tide, blue sky and sun the scenery couldn’t get much better. This area promotes itself as the home of “Anne of Green Gables”, and we passed through areas where there were theme parks and lots of activities for families.
It was almost 6 before we pulled into the camp, almost deserted now, as the holidays finished yesterday with their labour day, and children are back at school tomorrow. Only two other 5th wheelers in the camp, and got talking to them as they headed out for a meal. They will be lighting a campfire when they get home and are going over to join them…might be a long night!
While Ian had a shower, I got my bike and headed down a dirt track to the beach…
great until I had to ride home again!
