Friday August 29...Atlantic Salmon!!
August 29 Friday Jardine Municipal Camp, Richibuckto NB
Maybe it was the excitement of a days fishing, or the fact that we had to set the alarm for 6am, but neither of us slept very well. Heard some rain spots on the roof in the early hours as well, which was a bit disappointing, as had hoped for a sunny day.
Anyway we were both ready, with our lunch packed when we met Perry at 7. A very grey overcast day. Followed him further up the river for about 15mins, where we parked the van, and travelled with him down a track to a camp beside the river.
Perry had his little flat bottomed punt tied up. It was about 10 foot long, 3 foot wide and had a 9hp motor, and 2 little plastic chairs and a wooden seat. Quite a strong current as we headed over to the far side to the “brook”, as he called it. Ian didn’t have waders, so he fished in his shorts and sneakers…while Perry was garbed out in waders and warm jackets! But Ian was as happy as a sandboy, and fished with a dry fly for quite a while. There were fish rising and jumping all around, but had no luck, so went further up the river to a very nice spot where the river was running over rocks. Perry anchored the boat and Ian fished from it….not much room with the 3 of us on it! Changed to a wet fly, and he had a lot of fun, catching 3 or 4 smaller ones, before he struck a good one…it played so well and he was able to land it, but decided to release it. Perry thought it was about a 5 to 6 pounder.
Had quite a few showers, but were really lucky as by the time we got back to the car about 2.30 it had started to rain. Ian is elated as he has finally caught an atlantic salmon.
We had to return through the city of Miramichi, before we headed south again. It was such a miserable afternoon, decided not to take the coastal route, and just headed down 11 to Richibuckto, had seen a municipal camp listed in the book, but Jilly couldn’t find it, so after a few missed turns, we found it. …and a bonus as it had wifi!
