August 24 Sunday, Des-Rosiers, Forillon National Park, QB
Today has been a “driving day” as we wound our way around the coast, heading North East, the weather really warm and sunny. On the road by 8.30, sorry to leave our campsite which was just perfect.
It was only about 15kms to our first stop, Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, where Armand Vaillancourt, the sculptor we had met in Kamouraska, had just erected a huge driftwood construction. As is always the problem with speaking to people with only a little bit of English, we didn’t know the full story behind it, but soon found out. All the coastal beaches are covered with driftwood, and this town had a festival where artists had created works out of the driftwood, in fact one chap was still carving his. Armand had combined many large pieces, painted the white, and wrapped them with large steel cable, which was then lifted into place with a crane….quite different! He asked me to email him a photo…which I will do.
The road wound around the coast. Carved into the huge metal faces, with villages built around the coves,…and everyone with a big church and steeple. We stopped in Mont St-Pierre which is the national centre for para ponting, but were disappointed as the weather was so good, there was not enough wind, so no action.
The road now climbed over very high ridges, then dropped down to the little coves with villages, and with little traffic, and good road surface, it was a very pleasant drive.
We pulled over on the edge of a cliff in Cloridorme, got out our chairs and had lunch, a very nice spot to soak up the sun.
We arrived at the Forillon National Park about 3, and got a site a campsite quite close to the water. Had a read and a snooze, before an evening walk in the park. Sat around the campfire with two Quebec nurses, a very interesting night.
