Thursday September 29th, St Remy de Provence

Looking up at Le Baux-de-Provence

Our last full day in St Remy, and after a few days not doing too much and having a good rest, we went for a drive around this region, The Alpilles, which is a small range of mountains close to St Remy. It is a National Park with small towns dotted around it, and the roads wind through it, making a very enjoyable drive.

Our first stop was at Les Baux de Provence, an impressive hilltop town, although with the parking area well below the town, we gave it a miss, walking up hills isn’t the best at the moment.

Continued driving to the town of Fontvielle and after a visit to the information centre, we drove a bit further to the remains of a Roman Aqueduct, which although in quite a bit of disrepair, you can still walk along the channels in parts. History is everywhere.

Meandered along, passing through olive plantations and vineyards and many villages, with the beautiful Alpilles always nearby. Arrived at Eyguieres and time for a late lunch in this traditional Provencal  town, and found a simple local café. Turned out to be a great choice and we had a really good meal, tonight we will just have a snack. While we have been away, my brother has had to sample the Tiramisu wherever it was on the menu, (just don’t know where he puts it as he never seems to put weight on!), and in honour of him we decided to share one!

We had a very nice local wine for lunch and the waiter told us where the vineyard was, and after googling it, and finding that it was open after 2pm it seemed a good idea for a visit. Turned out to be an amazing drive in the valley to the Oddo Domaine winery and the almost new tasting rooms were so impressive with huge windows looking onto the Alpilles, reminding is a bit of Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay. We ended up having a great chat with Emily, who had been in NZ in 2020 when Covid broke out. She was on Waiheke Island working for Josh Emmett and ended up spending 4 months on the island before being able to head back to France. Such a small world.

It’s been such a good day, and the best news is that I have my taste back and feel that we are kicking Covid to touch!!!
