Thursday September 1, Forst

Can’t believe it’s September already. We have stayed put at this great little campspot for another two days. Yesterday it was cooler and we had light rain until mid-afternoon, a perfect day to do some catching up after a busy few days on the road. We joined Ineke and Johan at this winery this afternoon for a tasting session, and what a great fun time we had. This is a family run winery and Yvonne shared her knowledge with us, explaining all about this area, their vineyards cover 17 Hectares. They are starting their harvest tomorrow, which is quite early but the very dry, hot  summer has brought the grapes on. Their main product is Riesling which this region is renowned for, but we also sampled really good Grauburgunder (or Pinot Gris) which was excellent and my pick, as well as Chardonnay and Rose.  An hour and half later we wandered back to the motorhome, and they delivered a box for each for us!!!. And we rounded the afternoon off with a cold bottle that we shared with Ineke and Johan. An excellent day.

The weather has been good today and Ian decided to put some polish on the van as it is looking so dull and we want to show prospective buyers that a polish is all it needs. While he did that I walked to the neighbouring village of Wachenheim to get some bread for lunch. It was such a pleasant morning to be out walking and I took the paths through the vines before getting to the main road. Passed a group of Polish people who were already picking in a different vineyard, they didn’t speak any English but gave me a bunch of Riesling grapes which were very sweet.

The villages have a real French influence, and I guess we are only a short distance now from the French border. I came home via our village of Forst and the houses are very old, with shutters and grape vines growing along the facades. Took so many photos, it was an hour and half before I got back to the van! Lots of photos today!!
