Well deserved!!!
|
When I read that we could cycle to Heidelberg from the camp I
was delighted as had seen photos of the wonderful old town, and envisioned
riding through the streets. Hmmm!!! We
set off this morning, another warm day, and it was nice with the breeze blowing
and keeping us cool. We set off in the general direction of Heidelberg and the navigator
hadn’t really checked the route out properly. There seemed to be cycle paths in
all directions, stopped and asked cyclists and eventually got to the river and
followed a bike path into the city, don’t think we quite had the route right as
it didn’t seem as well used as we expected, but finally we arrived and looked
across the river to Heidelberg. Next step was to get up to the bridge on an
interesting steep ramp with concrete cleats and Ian managed to ride his bike
up, but I was a wuss and pushed mine. We could see the old town and thought we
would ride there but although there were cycle paths, the roads were just so
busy and we really weren’t enjoying the pressure of dodging cars and other cyclists
and pedestrians, and we opted out, rode back to the cycle path along the river
and headed back to Ladenburg. As the city traffic disappeared behind us we
started to relax and finally crossed back over the river to Ladenburg. We had
clocked up over 25kms, it was 1 o’clock and I took Ian to one of the café’s
with outside seating that I had passed yesterday,. It was so good to sit under
the tree and the cold local beer was excellent and we ordered a local German
equivalent to a pizza, a Flammkuchen, which we had enjoyed previously in Germany.
It is a very thin bread dough rolled out into a rectangle with a spread of crème
fraiche, and different toppings that you can choose. Just so good as the base
is so thin and light.
Ians bike tyres are wearing out and there are a few little
patches of blue showing through the tread. Found a bike shop not far from camp,
but it was closed from 1 to 3, so came back and put our feet up before
returning when they were open. It was a very good shop, and the guy was so nice
but couldn’t get the tyres in until Wednesday which was not going to work for us.
He did say though that there was still quite a bit of life in them before they
would puncture. Will just have to keep trying in different towns. This morning
we had passed a small local grower’s stall on the side of the road and noticed there
were free range chooks so returned to check out the goodies. We loaded our
panniers up with eggs, potatoes, fresh fruit and the sweetest and most
flavourful little cherry tomatoes I have ever eaten. Sitting outside in the
shade now feeling a little weary but its been a good day….even though we didn’t
get to see Heidelberg!!!
