This guy was so proud of his bone carving that his son brought back from NZ,

Yesterday was an at home and catch up day, it was very hot
and we just cruised. The next 3 days we are getting temps around 30 degrees so
we checked on P4N to find a site with shade trees and bike paths. Found what
looked to be a good spot and set Jilly on course. After a stop at a Rewe store
for some groceries we headed off through some less inspiring country until we
turned off the motorway and then we were in the “real country”. This area is
certainly showing the signs of the dry conditions they have been experiencing.
Arrived at the winery with the campsite only to find that there was no shade
and certainly no breeze. Back out the gate and then out with the app again, and
found this spot right on the Main River. It was another 20 minutes drive but we
arrived to find the most perfect location. Big trees to park under and the Main
River directly in front of us, and a really nice breeze blowing down the river.
It was 2.30 before we sat down under the trees to have lunch. Ian got the bikes
out but decided to put our feet up for a late afternoon siesta.
After it cooled a little I headed off with my camera to walk
into this delightful little village, it was uphill all the way and then reached
the vines growing on the hills above. Met a chap who was filling some tanks
with water, I apologised for not speaking German but said I was from NZ. Then a
big grin on his face as he pulled out a bone carving hanging around his neck.
He said his son had been in NZ for 5 years working in the wine industry, but he
didn’t remember what region. He explained that the water wasn’t for his vines,
but for the trees that have truffles growing under, it will be the first
harvest this year.
Continued wandering along the wee cobbled streets, past the
church whose bells chime every ¼ of an hour, and down to camp. Such a balmy
evening and we sat outside having dinner and watched 3 canal cruise ships pass
by only metres from where we were sitting. We were just saying tonight that
this is probably one of the best places we have stayed in all our travels in
Europe, and only €10 a night.
