Thursday August 1, Amberg

The river Vils that flows through Amberg

As often happens when we have no set itinerary, but only a general direction, we look on our apps to find where we can stay that is in a two to three-hour drive, that looks interesting. And that was what happened today. Found an extremely well reviewed spot in Amberg that was just a short walk from a very interesting old town. Little did we know how good our evening was going to turn out.
Had a really good drive, taking the secondary roads that took us through some lovely forested areas and farmland through to Wald then onto Amberg. We are noticing the huge amount of new solar panels on large farm buildings and house roofs, as well as very large solar farms. I have heard that nuclear power in Germany will finish in 2025 so guess the country are trying to find as many other sources of energy as possible.
Found a Lidl on route to stock up, our first grocery shop back in Germany and noticed the difference to other countries especially with the large variety of cold cured meats and interesting salads.
The camp in Amberg was really easy to get to, it is set up by the local community, free of charge and you pay for electricity and water. Perfect. Parked up in one of only two places left at that stage and were talking to our German neighbours and said we were from New Zealand. The next thing we heard someone saying about some “more Kiwis”!!! Becky and Rob McEwen from Taupo have rented a German motorhome and have been travelling for 3 weeks including going to a wedding in the Czech Republic. Such a small world. Rob asked us if we were going to the Jackie Bristow concert in town tonight, they had come specially for it as they are involved in the music scene in NZ and knew her. She was originally from Gore. After lots of chatting and catching up we ended up joining them for the evening.
They were heading to a brew pub in town for a meal and a few bevvies before the concert which seemed like a great idea to us. And what a memorable night, really enjoyed some local brewed beer and a very good meal before wondering around the town…they were like the local tour guides as they had arrived yesterday and had a good look around.
The concert was great, it was part of the towns summer music series, held in the courtyard of the library. It was packed with over 150 people. Jackie was delighted to see Becky and Rob as well as two more kiwis and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the music.
We ambled home and by the time we had a farewell drink it was after midnight, okay for us, but Becky and Rob had to leave at 6 in the morning to return their van to Frankfurt. They are flying home on Sunday. It has been a really great day and look forward to catching up with these two back in NZ.

Fabulous reflections and coloured houses. Fun evening with new friends from Taupo. This is 70 k east from Erlangen where Rebecca did her student exchange. I thouhgt the house styles looked familiar.

Had forgotten about her Germany trip. Well we passed Erlangen yesterday and are staying just north of there at Forcheim!
