The sun setting on the Danube from the bridge over to Vilshofen. |
Last night we had a great chat
with two German lads who were cycling from Hamburg to Croatia, always admire
people taking on these sorts of challenges.
Although this morning when the misty drizzle turned to heavy rain after
breakfast, I certainly didn’t envy them.
The rain slowed our progress this
morning, we just made another cup of coffee and waited until the it cleared at about
11 and wandered into the town. Freistadt is an interesting medieval town which
was founded in the early 1200’s and some of the fortifications still stand.
Enjoyed wandering through the streets of what appears to be quite an affluent
town by the style of shops.
Thankfully the rain had finished
and we were on our way again taking the lesser roads through to Prague. Such
interesting farming country with rolling hills and a lot of dairying, although you
don’t see the cows, they are all housed and there are no fences, all the feed
is cut and taken to them in the barns. It was a reasonably busy road and wasn’t
the widest which kept Ian on his toes.
Did smile at finding a truck
mowing the roadsides with only flashing lights, no other warnings, so different
to all the signage that is required in NZ. And really had to laugh when we
spotted a parked council truck taking up our lane, with a concrete mixer on the
back pouring some footpaths. No warnings what so ever. And then there was
another road closure which set us off on another cross country drive on some
rather interesting roads!
We had soon crossed the border
back into Germany and dropped down to the valley and the Danube. There were
river boats everywhere around Passau, but we continued on another 20kms to a
camp we had found at a marina on the river and were very grateful to find the
last spot of 20, didn’t fancy looking for somewhere else late in the afternoon!
Its very pleasant here as we look across the river to the town of Vilshofen.
