Wednesday July 24 Sankt Georgen

After the heat an evening walk was wonderful.

Enjoyed a really good drive this morning towards Linz then onto the B3, a secondary route running down the north of the Danube. We are now in what is called Lower Austria, just so different to where we have been in the mountains, especially noticing the architecture which has none of the traditional wooden features of the Tyrol region. Appreciated the much quieter roads though after yesterday’s rather hectic day.
Our first stop was at Ybbs on der Donau where we parked right beside the Danube…or Donau as it is called in Austria. The cycle paths run on both sides of the river with lots of cyclists using them. We were expecting to see quite a bit of traffic on the river but there was no sign of any barges.
The temperatures were rising and needed to find somewhere to stay that had some shade, hopefully by the river. Came across this large grass parking area which is on a side arm of the river, lots of shady trees and with the cycle path running through it. Lots of people were swimming in the river but the water didn’t really look that inviting – guess we are a bit spoilt.
Had intended getting the bikes out for a ride, but with the temperatures over 36 degrees it was just not that inviting, so ended up getting the chairs out and sitting in the shade, planning on having a cycle first thing in the morning.
Went for a walk later this evening that took us out to the main river and spotted a barge tied up on the other side. I think it is going to be a very hot night. These temperatures are here until Sunday by the looks of the forecast so will just have to get used to them!!!
A rather nice building beside the river at Ybbs on der Donau
