Tonight's sunset was like a painting. |
The weather is just getting
better and better, woke to another perfect morning. Decided to take the
motorway to the ferry terminal at Villa san Giovanni, a one and half hour trip
compared to three hours on the lesser road. A very easy and leisurely drive,
through open countryside at times, hay was getting made but we only saw one
small mob of sheep. And endless tunnels making for an easy drive. Jilly had us
to the ferry terminal without any hassles, joined the queues and bought our
return ticket, €91 for the 30 minute crossing. Only had to wait half an hour
before we were boarding, such a perfect day to take in the magnificent views
around us as we crossed the strait. The colour and clarity of the water has
really amazed us, we thought it was beautiful in Spain, but this really is
better.
Interesting arriving at the
Sicily terminal with sign posting not great, but we managed to find our way
onto the motorway, not before passing through a mountain of plastic bottles and
containers dumped in a huge pile underneath a bridge. Piles of rubbish is
pretty common in Italy, something we are trying to get used to, but this was a
huge pile.
Had found a likely campsite about
an hour’s drive from the terminal using the toll highway, have been advised to
use these where possible as the lesser roads are not very fancy. And we drove
through 21 tunnels in that short time, the Italians have really nailed it,
making easy driving through their very hilly terrain. The toll was only €2.60
and beat the alternatives.
Arrived at the campsite after a
“interesting” drive that Jilly took us through a few small villages, but it was
worth it. We are parked directly in front of the sea looking out at the Eolian
Islands. Breathtaking. There are a number of large groins running out so
obviously the sea can get quite rough. We have a small beach just below us and
a family spent the afternoon swimming, fishing and snorkelling. Chairs and
awning out and we just soaked up the view over a very late lunch.
Went for a walk late afternoon to
see what was nearby but not much happening, except for a few bars and a fish
shop. Our neighbour popped over to say hello and bring us each a glass of chianti
from where they live in Tuscany, she speaks some English. They come to Sicily
every June and she was extremely helpful about places to visit and campsites to
stay in. Lots of marks on the map.
