Wednesday May 15, Marghera, Venice

Loved this vintage Citroen and Caravan parked in
the camp tonight.

Yes, this afternoon we finally arrived at a campground 30 minutes bus trip from Venice, the starting point of our Italian tour.
It has been a leisurely day, especially as we know that there will be a lot of walking tomorrow! There was a supermarket about 1 km from our camp, decided to walk there before we left this morning and get the few things we needed, also keen to check out our first Italian grocery shop. It wasn’t a big store, but enjoyed seeing all the different products and impressed that the prices were very reasonable. And of course, there was every type of pasta, fresh and dried that you could imagine.
Today’s drive soon took us away from the magnificent Dolomite mountains and down the valley, following the Piave River with its glacial blue waters to Treviso. It was a busy road and we followed a large truck carrying a load of tiles that was travelling rather slowly. It didn’t worry us that there was nowhere to pass as Ian could enjoy the scenery more, but the truckie behind was getting very agro with him, flashing his lights and throwing his hands up in frustration when he wouldn’t pull over.
Once again, the weather played its part, with rain as we approached the campsite and temperatures plummeting to 10 degrees. Had planned to stay in a motorhome camping area a bit closer to Venice, but had reports that it was really muddy after all the rain over the past week. We have bought an ACSI pass this year that gives you really good discounts at out of season, and found this campsite with a bus stop to Venice outside the gate. It also had a laundry so have had a leisurely afternoon catching up on chores, and when the weather cleared and the sun came out we sat outside and soaked it up. Chatted with our Dutch neighbours and also to another English couple.
Our number plates, front and rear, have GB on it, and everyone looks at it to see what country you are from. Legally you have to display your country of origin on the rear so Ian bought a separate GB sticker in UK and today he stuck that on the rear of the van and covered over the GB on the number plates with NZ. Hope this clears up the confusion.
Looking forward to finally getting to see Venice tomorrow, planning an early start and have been looking at maps tonight. Have bought a pass from the camp for €20 each that covers us for all bus and vaparetto (boat) travel for the whole day. Not many photos today, guess I will make up for that tomorrow!!!
Looking through the grass to the supermarket and the Dolomites
this morning.

Drive by shot - very Italian!

Proudly Kiwi!!!!

A sunny picture of our campspot.
