Sunday May 12, Oberammergau

Beautiful fresco in Obermmergau

The weather is not playing the game, woke to rain, checked the forecast and rain all day, in every direction. Nothing for it but to continue on our route towards Austria. Initially thought we would go to Fussen but the camping areas weren’t very exciting, spotted this camp ground at Oberammergau which looked good with a short walk into the town….if the rain stopped.
Jilly behaved and set a good route taking the B roads through Gunzburg and Kaufbeuren, and the navigator didn’t get into any strife either. We just ambled along the very quiet roads, passing through farm land and lots of small villages. As we travelled south there were more and more dairy farms with the animals housed in sheds and the grass cut and carried into the stock.
All day the temperatures hovered below 5 degrees and as we arrived into Oberammergau it was 2 degrees with sleet on the window and the surrounding mountains were dusted with fresh snow.  Settled into a nice campground for €12 a night, plugged into electricity and turned the little ceramic heater on. Nice and toasty. Went for a wee walk with my camera and umbrella to try and capture some of the views. Just checked the forecast and tomorrow morning the rain should have stopped and there may even be a little sun – we live in hope!
Oberammergau is famous for the Passion Play which is performed every ten years on the years ending in 0. It was first performed in 1634 when the town was saved from the Bubonic plague after promising to perform this play every ten years. Next year, 2020 it will be performed again from May to October.
…..Later. Decided to forget the rain and put on our coats and with umbrellas up we walked into town. What a beautiful town, full of crafty little shops and so many houses painted with Frescoes depicting religious scenes as well as typical Bavarian themes. The architecture with the wide eaves and shuttered windows is so traditional for this area. Cold and wet when we got back but pleased to have had a wander around. Feel it has been a good day, despite the weather.
Blue, yellow and greem!

Very wet.

"Mooloo"...no a German cow.

Arriving in Oberammergau with snow, taken through the
window with the rain spots!

View from our campspot. Really
beautiful even if it is raining.

A walk in the rain in town, grabbed a few shots
of the Frescoes
