Evening light on the city of Wurzburg

Finally we woke to sunshine and blue skies and how different it has felt. The cloud did come in a bit this afternoon but no rain…a first!!! Needed to do some hand washing of the “smalls” before we left and set up the rack on the inside so they could dry. There is minimal housework in a motorhome but there is always daily chores that need to be done.
It was an uneventful easy drive this morning following the Main River on B26 to Wurzberg, less than an hours drive today. Very little traffic and it felt so good with the sun shining. As we got closer to Wurzberg it reminded us a little of following the Mosel River as we were now in the Franconian Wine region and the vines were on fairly steep hillsides above us. Had found a good Stellplatz on the Main River only a short walk from the centre of the old town and access was easy, just a short distance from the highway.
Found a good spot metres from the river where we can watch traffic going up and down. After a late coffee and a good look at the maps we set off into the city to have a look around. The pedestrian only Old Bridge crosses the river and is lined on either side by Baroque statues of Saints leading into the centre of town. We were surprised to see many people along the side of the bridge drinking wine from glasses and enjoying the sunshine. A little later a girl in a store was able to explain that this is called “The Wine Bridge” where people can buy a large glass of local wine to enjoy while taking in the view, with a refundable deposit when the glass is returned.
The streets were busy with pedestrians, bikes and trams but no cars. Gathered a map from the information centre which is in a beautiful building in the centre of the town square. We followed the pedestrian route which took us around the cities important buildings including the “Residenz”, a grand 18th century palace with very formal gardens. By the time we got back to the town centre it was mid afternoon and we were both ready for a very late lunch…or an early evening meal! Found a really nice place on the square and sat outside people watching and enjoying a very traditional pork schnitzel.
A very leisurely walk back to the motorhome, and of course, we had to follow the local tradition with a glass of Frankonian Sylvaner on the wine bridge. A perfect day, and very happy that Ian’s back has really improved so much and the big walk today was not a problem. Todays photos were all taken on my little Sony RX 100-4, decided not to carry my big camera around town.
Through the window!

We stopped at Wurzburg on our river cruise. I did the tour of the Bishops Residence while Bruce did a trip to Rotenburg. I also walked up to the old Residence on top of the hill for a great view.

Thanks all....saw the cruise boats parked in Wurzburg, the town had a lot of atmosphere, and really loved the wine bridge!

Jenny and Brian, sounds like a great trip in the Outback. We are just getting in the swing of things. Having a quick trip through to Italy as want to be there before it gets too hot. Lots of places around here we would love to visit, but it will have to keep for another trip.

Anne, you really did some walking in Wurzburg, we weren’t as “energetic”!! Had planned to go through Rothenburg but the weather forecast wasn’t good so opted for the other route.,
